“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” ―Gloria Steinem
When we are limited, our imaginations can fill in the gaps and keep us inspired. In this class we will discuss how art has been used as a form of radical resistance cross-culturally and we will create our own space to make large and radical artwork. We will talk about the different messages radical art wishes to communicate, the audiences it communicates to, and the methods different artists use to create an identity or persona. We will discuss the history of murals, graffiti, and street art of many cultures from ancient civilizations to today. We will then take those methods and apply them to several small projects and one final indoor mural project. The class will teach wheat-pasting, stencils, printmaking, sticker making and some calligraphy. But most importantly, you will build a consciousness around what radical art means to you, form your own opinions, and keep your imagination about the world of art large and limitless. This class will have a final product of a mural painted on a bed sheet to make painting large spaces accessible.
