Alternative Perspectives is the first in a series of Rise Out writing classes that focuses on crafting responses to what you’ve read, seen, or heard. These low-key classes will allow you to improve your writing skills and minimize “blank page terror” through prompted writing, pre- and post-writing activities, and individualized feedback. In these classes you will write reaction/response papers in the form of journal entries, opinion pieces, short essays, or other less-structured writing formats.
Classes are designed thematically, utilizing short stories, videos, poetry, essays, and excerpts from fiction and non-fiction books. As the name “Alternative Perspectives” implies, our focus in this class will be on considering multiple points of view. You may find yourself exposed to an author or speaker who grabs your interest!
Each class provides one-on-one instructor/student interaction, and assignments can be tailored to fit your writing goals. You may be invited to participate in online discussions about the reading assignments, but all other instruction and feedback is provided individually.
Students may enroll in each Responsive Writing class as it becomes available, as materials will be different each semester, and writing improves with more writing. All materials will be provided or are available free online.
(Note: This is not a literature class, though we may use popular fiction or classic literature as writing prompts or discussion points.)
