For 100 days in 1994, the world was stunned by the slaughter of over one million people in the tiny African nation of Rwanda.
In this class we will explore the meaning of genocide and how it differs from other types of warfare. We will examine the factors that built up to the 1994 events, including the ways Belgian colonists created or exacerbated ethnic tensions in Rwanda and surrounding countries, and how the international community responded to the crisis.
