This 8-week online workshop is for students who want to learn to stream videos for platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram, but is also applicable to creating your own documentaries, short films, auto-ethnographic chronicles of your experience under quarantine… the possibilities are endless. The class is appropriate for absolute beginners who have never edited a video before, but more experienced students are also encouraged to take part, challenge themselves, and learn new skills.
In this class you will learn how to:
* Cut and edit video using free software
* Create interesting video content on your own, with friends and family, or by using found footage
* Make “professional” lighting at home
* Get good sound quality
* Complete optional video challenges to make your own video content
This is an ungraded workshop and you can choose your own level of participation. “Video challenges” -- ranging from finding a video you like that fits a particular theme to creating a short video out of archival material -- will be available each week, but nothing is mandatory. The point of this class is to have fun, and surely you will accidentally learn something along the way!
You do not need any special equipment or software to take part in this class. We will primarily be using Davinci Resolve, a free video editing software which is often used by professional filmmakers. Students with access to the Adobe Suite can also receive outside support for learning Premiere Pro and AfterEffects. Ideally students will have access to a smartphone, webcam, or camera, in order to record their own audio and video. However, projects can also be done using "found footage" and creative editing techniques.
We will meet on the videoconferencing platform Zoom. The program is free to download. If students are not able to attend the class at the scheduled time, we will publish the notes from each class on Slack and can discuss making recordings of the class available.
