In this seminar for advanced high school students we will co-create a reading list of books related to history and politics and choose one book to discuss each week. All genres are open for inclusion: non-fiction, memoir, biography, satire, and fiction (including graphic novels and comics). Ideally the list will include a blend of books about current events as well as older classics.
The class will operate as a seminar, so each participant should be prepared to facilitate the class at least once during the term. This can be done directly, by leading the Zoom discussion, or indirectly, by creating a list of discussion questions to be posted to the web site. Students are also encouraged to keep a reading journal, but this is not required. This is an ungraded class with no assignments other than the reading itself.
Families will need to buy or borrow 6-9 books over the course of the term. Any format is acceptable, including audio versions if available.
Prerequisites: Previous high school-level coursework in American and world history and an interest in current events.
